Emergency Preparedness

This page is intended to provide tips to Marvin residents to aid in being prepared for when inclement weather or emergencies occur.

Winter Weather

Ice & Snow: Slow Down or Stay HomeWinter weather in Marvin and western Union County can include snow, ice, freezing rain, and dangerously cold temperatures. Even limited accumulation can create hazardous road conditions, power outages, and safety risks. Preparation ahead of time helps reduce impacts to your household and community.

Stay Informed

Monitor local forecasts and official alerts:

  • For watches, warnings, and advisories from the National Weather Service (NWS), visit the Union County Severe Weather Preparedness page.
  • Union County Emergency Alerts (UC Alerts) for weather warnings, road closures, and emergencies (see below).
  • NOAA Weather Radio or trusted weather alert apps.

Prepare Your Home

Before winter weather occurs:

  • Stock at least a 3-day supply of food, water, medications, and pet supplies.
  • Protect pipes by insulating exposed plumbing and disconnecting outdoor hoses.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries.
  • Use space heaters and generators safely; never operate generators indoors.

Winter Emergency Kit

In addition to a standard emergency kit, consider:

  • Blankets or sleeping bags.
  • Extra warm clothing (coats, gloves, hats).
  • Flashlights, batteries, and portable phone chargers.
  • Rock salt or sand for icy walkways.

Travel Safety

Please note that the Village of Marvin Public Works does not plow roads. Avoid travel during snow or ice if possible. If travel is necessary:

  • Reduce speed and allow extra time.
  • Fully clear snow and ice from your vehicle.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full.
  • Carry a winter car kit (blankets, flashlight, first aid kit, jumper cables).

Power Outages

Winter storms may cause extended outages:

  • Charge devices in advance.
  • Use alternative heat sources only if properly vented.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to preserve food.
  • Never use grills or fuel-burning devices indoors.
  • If you see downed power lines, do not touch them. Stay at least 30 feet away and call 911 and your utility provider immediately to report the hazard.
